The Background Story
Bridget lives in Yeppoon, Central Queensland. In 2015, her home was severely damaged by Cyclone Marcia, which swept through the town. The days following the storm brought scorching temperatures of 43 degrees, leading to rapid mould growth. Bridget's house was filled with smashed glass and debris, rendering it uninhabitable. Fortunately, one room was spared, containing all the family photo albums and important documents, including her passport. As a result, Bridget and her family had to live elsewhere for nine months while their home was being repaired.
During this challenging time, Bridget, who was not working due to her young children, realised that everything was lost and began researching ways to refurnish her home. Faced with the high costs of new furniture, she decided to explore overseas options. With her keen eye for value, Bridget planned a trip to Bali to connect with furniture suppliers.
In Bali, with the help of a new friend, Bridget discovered off-the-beaten-path suppliers. She spent days exploring and inspecting custom-made furniture, including beds, tables, shelving, brass knobs, light fittings, and stone baths. By the end of her trip, she had filled an entire shipping container with quality items, all for a total cost of AUD 16,000—significantly less than she would have paid in Australia, where a stone bath alone would have cost over $3,000.
Since that initial trip, Bridget has returned to Bali at least once a year, expanding her network of suppliers and keeping her options fresh. She has developed a robust database of contacts, ensuring that if it can be made in Bali, Bridget likely knows where to source it.
